Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Notification on the Rite of Exorcism, 27 January 1999.
The Latin edition of the revised rite of exorcism, approved by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 1998, was published yesterday. According to the decree of this dicastery, this same edition may be put into use immediately by those who are competent in law.
In virtue of a special faculty from the same Supreme Pontiff (cf. letter of the Secretary of State, no. 434.563, 2 October 1998), the CDWDS calls attention to the following.
Since the supervision of the sacred liturgy pertains to the diocesan bishop in the diocese entrusted to him, he may ask the Apostolic See that a priest, to whom is entrusted the role (munus) of exorcist, may also use the rite which had been in use up to now from Title XII of the Roman Ritual (1952 edition). The bishop may make this request after a mature consideration of the matter for the purpose of mercifully supporting the faithful in the struggle against the power of the devil.
Finally, in response to petitions received from Ordinaries who surely are aware of the pastoral reality of their jurisdiction, this CDWDS makes it known that it will freely grant the requested faculty.
