Congregation for the Clergy, Parish registers, 5 April 2008.
Some bishops have inquired about the possibility of allowing microfilming and digitalization of parish records by the Genealogical Society of Utah (Mormons). The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith noted the issue and the Congregation for Clergy issued a response which was sent to the Conferences of Bishops. The U.S. Conference of Bishops forwarded this response to all bishops on 25 April 2008.
Congregation for ClergyVatican City State
5 April 2008
Protocol N. 20080365
Your Eminence / Your Excellency,
By letter dated 29 January 2008, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith noted an issue raised by some bishops regarding the possibility of allowing the Genealogical Society of Utah (Mormons) to microfilm and digitalize information contained in parish registers.
Sharing the grave reservations expressed by that Congregation, this Dicastery is bringing this matter to the attention of the various Conferences of Bishops. The Congregation requests that the Conference notifies each Diocesan Bishop in order to ensure that such a detrimental practice is not permitted in his territory, due to the confidentiality of the faithful and so as not to cooperate with the erroneous practices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Trusting that you will understand the motives for this request, I take this opportunity to renew my sentiments of esteem and with every best wish, I remain,
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Claudio Cardinal Hummes
